Anterior chamber lens

The anterior chamber lens is seated in the eye in addition to the body's own lens. It is mostly suitable for severely near-sighted patients and constitutes an alternative to glasses and contact lenses in cases where LASIK or other laser surgical procedures are not to be utilised. The lens is implanted through a tiny incision along the cornea's edge into the anterior chamber in-between iris and cornea where it is attached to the iris using purpose-built small hooks. The anterior chamber lens can be removed or replaced very easily at any time.

The ARTISAN – anterior chamber lens

Since 1978 the artificial lens (ARTISAN®) has been implanted as a substitute for natural lenses in over 300.000 cataract surgeries.

In 1986 the ARTISAN®-lens had been implanted for the first time - in addition to the healthy natural lens - treating a patient suffering from high myopia.

The ARTISAN®-lens that is used today has been advanced technically since and was implanted for the first time in 1991. It is made of a plexiglass material which has been in use in ophthalmic surgery for over 50 years now and has been proven to be very safe and well-tolerated. Its diameter is 8.5 mm, it is about 1 mm thick and it weights only roughly 10 mg. By the means of this lens myopiae of -3 up to -23.5 dpt and hypermetropiae of +1 up to +12 dpt can be corrected. At the same time it offers the possibility of treating astigmatism as well.
