Technical equipment
For the surgical correction of defective vision most modern technology is available in order to guarantee a high degree of precision and reliability.
At the Ophthalmic Clinic at Gendarmenmarkt following devices are employed:
During pre-examination most sophisticated devices the very consistency of the eye is captured:
Corneal topography system (OrbscanTM II)
By this highly specialised corneal evaluation system three-dimensional corneal measurements are conducted. (determination of detailed data regarding the corneal front and rear areas) These measurements serve as the basis for the map-like determination of the corneal thickness (pachymetrie). Thereby the cornea's finest spot is captured. It helps the surgeon to determine the maximum amount of cornea that may be removed during refractive corneal surgery.
Pupil distance meter (Procyon)
This precision meter gathers the exact pupil diameter in daylight, twilight and in darkness in order to be able to determine how much the pupil dilates in darkness. The diameter that is measured in darkness is the basic condition for determining the surgical diameter during treatment. If treatment was to be conducted without these measurement results it could lead to halo vision.
ZywaveTM-Aberrometer
Tiny differences in the refraction of the eye which only appear in one sector of the optical system "eye" can be measured with this specific device. The aberrometer measures the actual misalignment of the optical system based on the wave-front technology.
This way treatment can be specially tailored and individually adpated for your eye. Employing these state-of-the-art technology the corneal surface may be straightened individually according to the results of the examination.
During surgery
Femto-Seconds-Laser
Femto-Lasik is the latest way of having defective vision surgically corrected. This way for the first time it is possible to conduct Lasik treatment without utilising mechanical blades (micro keratome). In addition to the Excimer-laser which is conducting the actual corneal correction a Femto-Seconds-laser is employed as well. This originates the flaps only by laser beam.
The Femto-Lasik-surgery today is the most advanced technique in refractive surgery. Femto-Lasik is a most precise and safe method of treatment.
Excimer-laser: Zyoptix Z100TM
Excimer-laser of the latest generation are equipped with two significant safety systems:
A quickly reacting eye-tracking system to compensate spontaneous eye movement. The "flying-spot-system" pre-programmedly guides the small laser beam over the cornea. By this the cornea can be removed precisely accurate according to your defective vision.
By means of the Zyoptix Z100 - wave-front-aided or removal-optimised (aspherical) treatments can be conducted apart from the standard LASIK-surgery.
Additionally the new Zyotix Z100 by Bausch&Lomb is equipped with a retinal scanning system (iris photograph - comparable to future biometric passport data). This way the patient is recognised. The corresponding pre-examinations where the iris had been scanned are matched and a personalised treatment is introduced and guaranteed. The increase in safety is owed to the fact that neither the patient nor the eyes are to be mistaken.
By comparing sitting of the iris - when on the operation table - to the results of the pre-examinations the twisting of the eye (so called rotation) is equalised. Consequently the displacement of the axis-correction is prevented. Not doing so a displacement of only 6° would lead to a miss-correction of 20%. This is of decisive importance when it comes to wave-front-guided (aberrometrically-guided) LASIK as well as when treating astigmatism.
Regular maintenance as well as the attendance of a specially trained technician during surgery guarantee for safe surgery results.
Moreover for specific medical findings the most sophisticated examination devices are at hand.
