Femto-LASIK procedure
Femto-LASIK follows the very same 3 steps as conventional LASIK surgeries.

1. Preparation of the corneal lamella using the Femto-Seconds-Laser

Initially a fixation ring is put on the eye. On this a contact glass is placed by which the Femto-Seconds-Laser laser beams are computer-controlledly focused on the cornea in a previously calculated depth. The corneal lamella originates whilst many thousands of laser pulses are strung together on one level. Through the operating microscope the surgeon can exactly supervise the progress of the laser incision. Once the corneal lamella is completely prepared the fixation ring is removed and the corneal lid is folded back with a precision tool.

2. Correction of defective vision (Excimer-laser)

As during conventional LASIK procedure now the defective vision (near-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism) is corrected by abrading the cornea with the Excimer-laser.

3. Repositioning of the corneal lid and healing process

Finally the anterior corneal lamella is folded in again. It attaches itself and seals the cornea like a body's own patch. In the first hours the eye waters and rubs a bit and the vision is still blurry. As early as a few hours following the Femto-LASIK good sight is recovered; until the final stability is reached 2 to 3 months may pass.

The preparation
Those wearing contact lenses need to do without them for 2 weeks (soft contact lenses) or for 3 weeks (hard contact lenses) in advance to the date of pre-examination. This goes for the day of the surgery as well. Besides the routinely examinations such as measurements of the spectacles, verification of intraocular pressure, tear film measurement and the examination of the eye background several modern analyses take place:

  • cornea thickness and surface measurement
  • pupil measurement
  • measurement of aberrations (wave front)
  • glare sensitivity

and as the case may be further examinations. Since the pre-examination requires for the pupils to be medicinally dilated, subsequent to the examination you may not drive a car yourself.

After the elaborate examinations - considering your personal demands - a detailed pre-operation discussion takes place in order to choose the best method of treatment; in conjunction with the consulting physician.

The follow-up

The first follow-up examination takes place the very next day after the surgery. Further examinations are conducted after 1 week's time, after 1 month's time and up to 3 months after. Only 2 to 3 days after the procedure you are allowed to honour your occupational obligations again.

At the follow-ups the eyes are examined thoroughly once again and the quality of your vision is verified by most modern evaluation devices.
